2019-2020 school year
HELLO PS 59 FAMILIES!
My name is Judy Londa and I will be your child's art teacher for the coming year. I am looking forward to an exciting year in the art studio, filled with many creative, thoughtful and engaging art projects.
The materials and methods we will explore include: painting with tempera and watercolor paints; drawing with ebony pencils, oil pastels and other drawing tools; sculpting with clay, found-objects, wire and Model Magic; collage making with paper and other textured materials; and printmaking using traditional and non-traditional methods. Throughout the year, students will be learning about artists and styles from around the world, and throughout history. Woven into all of our lessons are the elements of art such as line, shape, form, texture, space, value and color.
In everything we do, I stress the importance of art as experiential. My hope is that students in the art studio feel comfortable to explore the various materials, and gain confidence and mastery through experimentation. In the art studio, 'mess-ups' are opportunities for growth and creativity. My motto is: "There are no mistakes in art, only possibilities!'
Questions? Comments? Feel free to email me at: [email protected]

Dear Families,
Thank you for all of the donations of recycled goods for our 'found-object' sculpture unit!! Students have been making sculptures using paper towel rolls, wine corks, wire, pipe cleaners, egg crates, packaging materials, fabric, boxes and more!!
To make these sculptures, we looked at the mobiles and wire sculptures of Alexander Calder (including watching a video of Calder's Circus); Pablo Picasso's 'Head of A Bull' sculpture (made from bicycle parts); and with the upper grades, also the sculptures of Louise Nevelson, Ai Wei Wei, and El Anatsui. From looking at the work of these artists, students have noticed that sculptors often make art from everyday, household objects.
Inside this edition of the newsletter, please find photos of Pre-K through 5th grade in the Art Studio drawing, painting, sculpting, collaging and printmaking. In the Special Events and Exhibitions, please note the continuing collaboration of
1-323 and High School of Art and Design 12th grade animation students; and
5-417's recent collaboration with a 10th grade illustration class.
This June, 4th grader, Alejandro De La Puente, will be exhibiting his drawing 'The Vortex' at MoMA Education center as part of the Manhattan Borough Arts Festival. Congratulations to Alejandro for the honor of having been accepted into this exhibition. Photos of the opening to come in June.
Early-Bird Art is in it's 5th session and will continue through June. 5th graders continue to beautify the school with large-scale paintings and drawings exhibited in the lobby and the library. Enjoy!

january 2018
Welcome to the January edition of the Art Studio Newsletter!
This winter, students have been busy creating sculptures with clay. These sculptures will be fired (baked) in our kiln, then glazed (painted) and fired again. Clay sculptures will be coming home in March/April. See class pages for particular clay units of study.
Most classes were able to paint flowers to decorate the 5th floor for International Night. (See "Special Events and Exhibitions" for photos of the 5th floor and thank you's to parents). Students are also making art for the "Display My Art" fundraiser. Information regarding this project will be coming home soon. Thanks to Meg Chamberlin for running this 'artistic' fundraiser!
Our sculpture unit continues throughout the winter/spring with Model Magic, wire, beads, paper, and found materials. (more to come on this soon!)
Noteworthy: 4th graders' buddy portraits were displayed in the Bloomingdale's windows as part of the Mentoring USA program! Congrats 4th graders!! (see "Special Events and Exhibition" page, and 4th grade page)
Please visit the class pages for descriptions and photos for each grade.

Hello PS 59 Parents! (September, 2017)
