3rd graders art at Bloomingdales!
3rd graders exhibited their "Ancient Egypt" inspired art at Bloomingdales this January. The exhibition was part of the Mentor USA program, organized by our librarian, Lori Talish. The students made the art in art class, using multiple materials and methods. Students made animal human combinations inspired by Ancient Egypt, then added texture and collage to their pictures. Next, students made 'Cartouche's', or nameplates, of their names in hieroglyphics! Students printed these drawings with black ink onto brown paper, to replicate the stone reliefs found in Ancient Egyptian tombs. Congratulations 3rd graders!
international night drawings and sculptures
Congratulations to PS 59 students on their drawings of 'animals of the world' for our International Night celebration! Congrats as well to 3rd graders on making animal sculptures out of butcher paper, tape and paint. These sculptures and paintings help make the International Night a creative celebration! Thanks to parents who helped display the beautiful student art in the 5th floor and lobby!

1-323/HSAD collaboration - part 3 (2018)
High School of Art and Design senior animation class made their final visit to PS 59 Art Studio this past Monday, June 4th. For this visit, the high schoolers showed their animated compilation to the 1st graders. 1st graders loved seeing their art come to life in these 30 second shorts. Even though the animations were short, it took the seniors many months to put together the art, sound and voices of these creations.
PS 59 AT THE MANHATTAN BOROUGH ARTS FESTIVAL

5-417/hsad collaboration
This spring, 5-417 artists are collaborating with a 10th grade High School of Art and Design animation class. Firstly, 5th graders drew their interpretation of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" poem using markers and colored pencils. Next, we gave these 28 drawings to Brian Lee, the High School animation teacher, who in the following few weeks had his students make illustrations inspired by the 5th graders art.
On May 22, 23rd and 24th, these drawings will be exhibited together in the HSAD Spring Art Show. 5th grade/10th grade pairs will meet for the first time in the High School gym during their art class, Tuesday, May 22nd. 5th graders are so excited to see the 10th grade rendition of their art, and to meet their 10th grade 'art partner'!

PS 59 and HIGH SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN
For the 2nd year in a row, High School of Art and Design 12th graders and PS 59 1st graders will be collaborating on an art project. HSAD animation students will be turning 1-323's printmaking animal collages into animated shorts. To do this, the high school and elementary school pairs met in our Art Studio to talk about their art. 12th graders took audio recordings of our 1st graders talking about their collages, which will be used in the animated shorts. They also scanned the 1st grade art in order to make the computer animations.
On Monday, April 16th, 1-323 walked through the building to the High School of Art and Design animation studio on the 6th floor. There, the students met up with their buddy and saw the progress being made on their animations. Students were so excited to see their art moving on the computer screen, along with their voices! The high schoolers have been working very hard to finish these animated shorts. We will see the finished products some time in May, hopefully! The screening will take place in PS 59 Art Studio, where all students will once again come together.
ps 59 at sotheby's art auction
In March, 3-439 and 5-417 students had their art exhibited at Sotheby's Art Auction. Students were excited to see their self-portrait and optical illusion printmaking at this prestigious auction house. There was also a reception in the evening, where councilman Ben Kallos spoke to the student artists. Students were given certificates for participating in this Upper East Side District 2 public art show. Congratulations to these young artists! Thank you to Anastasia Macris, Ariel Rosaria and all of the parent chaperones who helped make our walking trip fun and rewarding!
international Night Flowers!
If you happened to be on the 5th floor lately, you will see the walls covered in flowers. Students in K-5 painted flowers, using artists, Yayoi Kusama and Georgia O'keeffe as inspiration. Thanks to Chie Hoffman, Randi Nathan, Lindsay Birch, Azra Hot, Laura Daggett, Laure Chetty, and friends for hanging all of those flowers!!

This January, 2018, 4th graders can view their art hanging in the Bloomies' windows!
4th graders should be proud, and I'm sure the buddies are loving seeing their portraits painted by these very talented 4th graders. Thanks to Ms. Talish for organizing the walking trips to Bloomingdale's, and thanks to the parents who accompanied us!

And here is the video!
1-315, 1-317, 1-321 collaboration with hSAD
3 first grade classes made simple crayon drawings of monsters in their art class this past winter. These drawings went to the students of Brian Lee, illustration teacher at High School of Art and Design. Mr. Lee's students then re-created these monsters in their own way, using various 2-dimensional materials. We had a chance to see these monster pairings on view at the High School Spring Art Show. It was a lot of fun to try to find our 1st grader monsters and see how the high schooler interpreted our art!
